CHILTON NAMED
FOR EARLY-DAY
STOREKEEPER

CHILTON -- SPL -- The town of Chilton was named for Lysias B. Chilton of Marlin.
Mr. Chilton was born in Greensborough, Ala., in 1849.  He came to Texas in 1861.
His first job was as a newsboy on the H. and T. C. Railroad.  Later he entered the mercantile business at Bremond before going to Marlin where he was a clerk for Perkins.  He and a Mr. Parr bought out Mr. Perkins.  B. C. Clark bought out Parr, and the firm became Chilton's later.  The store at Chilton was one of several he established in Falls County.
After the railroad came this store was moved to the street paralleling the tracks near the depot.  He sold it to J. R. Lane in 1889.
